The last two Star Wars franchise films are the Rosetta Stone that tells you everything you need to know in order to understand (1) why the West appears to be at war with itself, (2) why Trump and Brexit happened, and (3) why there seems to be such a lack of understanding amongst the administrative class about the reasons for these things.

The point? The literati and the elites have fundamentally different tastes, values, and and relationships with reality and meaning than do members of the public. Now there’s no inherent problem with difference—but if one party to the difference is always “above” the other, in status, in income, in practical rights, in mobility, and so on—then you’re going to have discord and push-back on your hands.
